Ramblings of an old Doc

Firefox 7.0, contained a bug that hid  some or even all user ‘add-on’s  from those who updated a prior version of the browser to the latest stable one.

After noticing the problem, Mozilla stopped the distribution of automatic updates to users running the stable version of the browser on their computer.

Firefox 7.01, the update that fixed the hidden add-on issue is now available for all users. It can be downloaded from the official website or via the web browser’s internal updating.

To do that you have to click on Firefox > Help > About Firefox to trigger the check for a new version of the Internet browser.

The Firefox 7.01 release fixes only this single issue.

How did this happen? Well, these folks are working hard and really fast on the browser and it probably escaped their attention. Still, if this happened, what else has probably been overlooked?

Might pay to slow down a bit and have a fuller “preflight checklist” to review before loading the passengers and heading down the runway.

Once is a “meh”.  If it happens more often could damage their excellent reputation.

We’ll see, and as usual, I’ll try to keep you posted.

Just had an issue with FF7.01. Connected to the net with no problem then all of a sudden I'm getting problem loading page, FF can't find the server at so and so. I closed it and re-opened it...nothing. Okay... I figure its the update so I open up IE9 just to check and IE9 ain't workin' worth a shit. So I uninstalled FF, cleaned it up then re-installed it. Now the damn things working faster than it did before. Go figure.

I doubt Firefox 7 is compatible with my favorite add-ons so I'll stick with version 3.6.

Got 7.01 - now Adobe Flash keeps crashing.  Guess I will have to wait for 7.02.

Yep. Firefox 7.01 is a bust:

"According to Mozilla, it has received "lots of sync complaints around server problems". Accounts cannot be deleted due to a deletion-page error. The company said that it may have "broken the 'reset your sync account' fix as well." Additional issues include an incompatible Yahoo Toolbar in 7.0.1, Yahoo mail errors, Java incompatibilities, as well as AVG anti-virus, which needs to reinstalled manually by users once they upgraded to 7.0.1." - http://www.tomsguide.com/us/mozilla-Firefox-7-browserwars,news-12791.html

Might be time for Mozilla to rethink the rapid release schedule. Releasing broken browsers will only hurt them in the long term.

on Oct 10, 2011

They will because other browsers aren't going to wait around for them. Opera...Google Chrome...Pale Moon et al.

Hurt them in the long term?  I think it could hurt them in the short term as well.

Best regards,
Steven.

Same here.

Have they fixed the biggest bug yet? (The incessant memory leakage)

I swiched over to Chrome when Firefox started hijacking my addresses I entered into the address bar. I don't really think Chrome is better, but at least I can avoid stupid bugs like those in this thread.

The only thing I don't like about FF at the moment is I seem to be clocking up 1Gb+ of temporary internet files in a week!

And before you say it, no, it's not pr0n...

Yes... it was fixed back in ff 4 Beta 12.

I was using version 5 and it was still awful (compared to 3.6.x).

Now Firefox7.01 will not let me log in. I had to use Chrome to get here. Couldn't log in through the forums or at Stardock.com despite several tries. Mozilla better hurry up and do something or bye bye FF.
