Guess I know where I’m storing a zillion walls…
Windows Live SkyDrive is about to get a huge boost to the free storage space allowed with the service. Liveside reported earlier today that the popular Microsoft service will get a storage upgrade, allowing unlimited storage space for both Office documents and photos, leaving the original 25 GB for any other files you wish to store in the cloud.
“So in order to satisfy the demands of the “cloud” generation, Microsoft needs to move forward, particularly in terms of cloud storage space. LiveSide recently learnt that Microsoft will soon offer unlimited photos and Office documents storage on SkyDrive Wave 5, and this is how it will work:
Unlimited storage space for all Office documents
Unlimited storage space for all photos
25 GB of free storage for everything else
No specific details are revealed as to when this will be made available, but as usual we believe this will be “coming soon”.” – Liveside
This increase will probably take some time to accomplish since SkyDrive Wave 5 has 70 million users. There are also plans to expand the realms of SkyDrive, as Microsoft is currently developing native clients for Windows, Mac OS X, iOS and Android along with the client embedded into Windows Phone 7.
I sense this is to anticipate Google possibly doing something similar – remember Gdrive?
Microsoft has been increasing the space allowed for SkyDrive users since its inception in 2007. Then it offered 500 MB which jumped to 5 GB in 2008. Now it offers 25 GB free. This latest move puts MS in first place for cloud storage.
MS has also got a lot better at listening. Now multiple file selection is supported and Microsoft is developing SkyDrive client apps for Windows, Windows Phone, iOS, Mac and Android, and that SkyDrive will soon support devices integration.
It’s really getting harder to say “No!”.
Just one thing, folks: Don’t store tax documents, Social Security info and sensitive information in the cloud just yet. Or maybe ever. You’ve got plenty of other “stuff” (as the late George Carlin put it) to put there.
