Letter from Steve Jobs

August 24, 2011–To the Apple Board of Directors and the Apple Community:

I have always said if there ever came a day when I could no longer meet my duties and expectations as Apple’s CEO, I would be the first to let you know. Unfortunately, that day has come.

I hereby resign as CEO of Apple. I would like to serve, if the Board sees fit, as Chairman of the Board, director and Apple employee.

As far as my successor goes, I strongly recommend that we execute our succession plan and name Tim Cook as CEO of Apple.

I believe Apple’s brightest and most innovative days are ahead of it. And I look forward to watching and contributing to its success in a new role.

I have made some of the best friends of my life at Apple, and I thank you all for the many years of being able to work alongside you.

Addendum:

On a personal note, this news could mean that Steve Jobs' health will be taking a turn for the worse.

Mr. Jobs - I know you'll probably never see this small notice and note, but I wish to join the many who thank you for your contributions to the world of computing.

More though, as a fellow human I wish you well, and if a miracle is out there, I hope you find it or vice versa.

If not, I wish you peace and the care which should allow you to enjoy what's left. I wish that for us all.

Apple stock dropped 5% in late trading but probably will recover as Jobs is not leaving Apple.

From Apple to Crapple.

I think NOT!!

This is totally unexpected! (Maybe it was expected and I just wasn't following)  I wonder if Apple will become the new Microsoft and slowly decline over the years, after Bill Gates stepped down way back in the day.  If so, who will replace Apple?  Linux?  But Linux is non-profit, as they sell their OS for nothing, so that's not it.  Maybe Google will (I hope not).

It has to be be for health reasons..........sad.........An innovator and clever business man..........but looking at recent pictures he does not look a well man. Hope he rests and recovers. Health is everything.

Well many have already called Apple the new Micrososft, though it was more in relation to their ethics then their business success.

Yep ... I don't have much time for Apple, they are on the warpath with anything and everyone of late. It's all down hill from here ...

But I do wish Steve the best, I hope his health is improving.

very nicely and sensitively put doc....

So is this the part where we gloss over the horrible things Apple has done under his leadership, and focus on the good bits?

I don't think so. Maybe the next guy can put some morality back into the business, but being strongly suggested by Jobs I don't quite see it.

I don't relish anyone's death, but i'll not worship the idea of a man I never knew.  Hes a man, and most of apples success can be derived from the people that work there, not just the leader taking the credit.  I find it funny how we are supposed to feel sad for a guy who would have fired us as an employee for so much as talking to him in an elevator.  I give his memory the same amount of compassion.

I wonder how happy his life has been, how much he has done to improve the world that we live in.  Ipads?  technology?  Its a great distraction, from stuff that is more important.  If you rationally think it out, technology is reducing our jobs, and steve jobs shares some of the credit.  After he dies, I'll probably never think about him again.

No, and Yes ...

And we care.... because.........????

Maybe he ran out of things to claim as his own and is now looking for something else

Obviously this is health related and he needs to lessen his personal workload.  In that regard I wish him all the best... because regardless of his business practices, whether you admire or agree with them or not, and yeah, he has been a smug bastard at times... a lot of the time, but there's still no need to wish ill upon him health-wise.

My father always had a saying: "There but for the grace of God go I."   Something to think about when wishing ill upon others... and how karma has a way....

Just sayin'

Thank you syd. I was hoping to keep folks from the usual "I hate because..." stuff. One only has to read Karen's thread to realize how badly off some are yet seem to find the energy and strength to create beauty, humor, friendship and caring for those who surround them.

Very true, old friend. Every time I think about Steve, you, Greg (really didn't know he had severe problems), TCMM and Smedley (even though he sucks) I realize how small my health problems are in comparison to others'.

We should all try walking a mile in someone else's shoes (if he has enough money to buy a pair) before judging.

As you pointed out so well Mark, "What goes around, comes around.":  It's a path we all walk, so helping others and being generous eases the burden for us all.

And in Apple fanboy land there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
