Ramblings of an old Doc

This one really caught my eye. It seems that one of the original designers of the PC thinks the answer is “Yes.”

The engineer who thinks so is none less that IBM’s Middle East and Africa’s CTO, Mark Dean. He was one of the magic twelve who designed IBM’s PC

thirty years ago.

“PCs are being replaced at the center of computing not by another type of device — though there’s plenty of excitement about smartphones and tablets — but by new ideas about the role that computing can play in progress. These days, it’s becoming clear that innovation flourishes best not on devices but in the social spaces between them, where people and ideas meet and interact. It is there that computing can have the most powerful impact on economy, society and people’s lives.” -  Mark Dean

He himself states he rarely sits plunked down at his desk in front of a box and here’s where he really sheds some light on his feeling:

“I, personally, have moved beyond the PC as well. My primary computer now is a tablet. When I helped design the PC, I didn’t think I’d live long enough to witness its decline. But, while PCs will continue to be much-used devices, they’re no longer at the leading edge of computing. They’re going the way of the vacuum tube, typewriter, vinyl records, CRT and incandescent light bulbs.” – Ibid

I echo this. I never thought I’d use one a Pad. I chided Island Dog (who I hope is laughing heartily at my hubris). I now use it all the time, as it’s my favorite reader. In the past, I never thought I’d use a laptop nor a smart phone. Guess what.

The fact is, that our gadget horizon has expanded radically, and portability is a super must, along with vertical and horizontal integration for business/productivity as well as social networking, and entertainment. Being a Luddite won’t gain you a thing. There are many advantages (and some disadvantages) to these new platforms.

Our tech is revolutionizing our culture. No one can deny this after watching the Middle East upheavals and the London riots.

I’d like to see more ‘real’ contact between people as opposed to ‘virtual’ but face it, distances are still real.

That’s why this Community is so important and why WinCustomize is our hub.

My personal feeling is that skinning needs to be more relevant to this new world as well. I feel Stardock’s apps have to infiltrate the business and social worlds even more strongly despite Windows 7 and because of the coming Windows 8.

Windows XP is still very prevalent in the business world, but that will start declining in the near future. Wallpapers need to include mobile/pad sizes. There needs to be a miniWB for smart phones and Windows pads, as well as skinned app-tiles to defeat the horrendous “Metro” monocolored rectangles.

Since Windows 8 will have a choice (we believe) of task bar or Metro, then both these should be addressed…. and the female market should  be addressed.

What are your thoughts?

Yes Roloccolor, being with kids take up all one's attention and the pads require both hands. When I'm with the kids (multiple here too), I don't use any form of electonic entertainment. TV, tablet, computer, etc. The kids won't be young forever and I would rather spend the time with them, although it's not always instantly gratifying..

That said, this is exactly the reason the tablet is better than the computer for me. I don't dedicate hours of my days for the net or games, so I get to read emails, check up on forums, facebook, TED talks, web comics and such during the time the kids are doing something I'm not. For example when I'm waiting for our 2 year old to fall asleep in the next room and carrying him back to bed a couple of times before that happens. Or sitting next to my wife after kids have gone to sleep and she wants to watch something from the TV (I don't like TV much). Or next to her in bed while she reads a book before falling asleep.

This may come from the time we met when she was reading a lot for her studies. I bought a Nintendo DS back then to have something to do while she studied.. Anyhow, I find the iPad ideal for doing something myself when the others are occupied. It's instantly on and situated exactly where I want.

[edit] Grr.. had to boot up my laptop to add the 'enters' in the message. For some reason line ends from iPad don't show on the foum. Touche!

I was watching a flash move from the BBC while in the US, on my iPad, through my home desktop while riding in a car in a different city today.  It has its uses.

The iPad did get me out of my basement cave up into the inhabited parts of my house more but doesn't begin to replace my desktop.  It's just convenient for checking your bank, looking up info and watching Neflix/reading books.  Nice in a car for the GPS map and a handy emergency phone/calculator/notepad/calender when needed.

Yes, Forums has issues with the iPad (or vice versa). And yes to Sinperium...there are ways around the flash issue.

starkers, I understand your point of view. Also, going from portrait to landscape mode might be unpleasant for you... sorry about that, mate. Are you sure she added the 'cave'... that she wasn't just calling you an old bat?   j/k.

Skyfire and Flash are other apps which make games compatible with the iPad. Basically, Apple didn't want Flash on the iPad because it used the battery much faster than a good mobile platform designed for more modest entertainment purposes as well as productivity purposes. Something had to be sacrificed. It was Flash.

Actually I heard the reason why flash isn't used on the iPad was because Jobs doesn't like flash. Be that as it may why would anyone drink apple's koolaid with locked in DRM? And not to mention the price of admission is very high compared to other tablets. High in price just like other Apple products.

Anyone ever look inside an iPad?

Interesting read. Here I am, writing a forum reply on my iPad while my high-end PC I built two years ago (still quite powerful) is gathering dust.

I use mine as a file server.  Literally.  Since it will always be on, and the Blueray can read it to play tv episodes.

The wording in the article is wrong. He means "The age of the desktop PC". In that case, it's true.

But if we mean PCs as in Personal Computer then he's completely wrong.

Yes. Desktop.

Also, going from portrait to landscape mode might be unpleasant for you..

Yeah, when you have vertebrae with no discs between them, it hurts to turn your head from landscape to portrait view.

I have tried using a bandage for additional support but then I have difficulty breathing and swallowing, etc.

Nah, I think I'm stuck with my Desktop PC in landscape, I'm afraid.

It did occur to me, however, to tip my monitors on end to practice using portrait view, but that didn't work too well cos too much sh!t was off-screen that way.

Are you sure she added the 'cave'... that she wasn't just calling you an old bat?

Yep, she definitely added 'cave'.  However, I did inquire as to the 'old bat' thing, and I just got a wry smirk... so you may be on to something there.

She did ask where the bat pole was, though, and I replied: "Don't be silly, how am I gonna get my cups of coffee down here if I'm hanging on for grim death while sliding precariously down a 'bat pole'?"

Nope, can't afford to land with a thud, not with my aching and brittle bones.  Owwww.

Yeah, same with mine and the Netgear Stora.. can access video, music, photos and documents anywhere in the house there's a network connected device.  That's the great thing about the netbooks [Shaunna and I each have one]... can be sitting on the bog [loo] watching TV, video, etc.

The other great thing about the Stora is that I only have to have that on,... as is connects via the router rather than the PC.... and being a less complicated device [not as much junk in it] it represents a power saving as opposed to leaving my PC on down here to do the same thing.  Currently I have 2 x 1tb HDDs in it, but I can interchange between drives easily and will grab a couple of 2tb's later for greater storage capacity.

Why not make a game or two while you're at it? While the AppStore is filled with tons of games, there are precious few good strategy games available. Right now I'm rooting for the publishing of King of Dragon Pass by A#. I really hope they do well and we get to see some games with more content beneath the surface.
