Ramblings of an old Doc

Calibre is a free and open source e-book library management application developed by users of e-books for users of e-books.

“It has a cornucopia of features divided into the following main categories:

    • Library Management
    • E-book conversion
    • Syncing to e-book reader devices
    • Downloading news from the web and converting it into e-book form
    • Comprehensive e-book viewer
    • Content server for online access to your book collection    -   Calibre

Please watch the demo of Calibre in action here:  http://calibre-ebook.com/demo , along with tutorials an screen shots… ok, since you asked so nicely:

You can read the history written by Kovid Goyal (Calibre’s developer) here.

“Today calibre is a vibrant open-source community with half a dozen developers and many, many testers and bug reporters. It is used in over 200 countries and has been translated into a dozen different languages by volunteers. calibre has become a comprehensive tool for the management of digital texts, allowing you to do whatever you could possibly imagine with your e-book library. Reading is very important to me and one of my goals has always been to prevent either the fragmentation or the monopolization of the e-book market by entities that care solely for short-term goals. As the calibre community continues to grow, driven by book lovers, for book lovers, hopefully it will always present an alternative for people that love to read e-books and want to be in control of their own digital libraries.” – Kovid Goyal

I believe that pretty much sums it up.

Oh yes, thanks to Hankers who brought it to my attention. Thank you for a great “heads up”, my friend!

This program works great.

Also, for those that have purchased books with DRM from Amazon Kindle and Nook Books, there are plugins that will remove the DRM which will allow you to convert your purchases to another format so that you can read them on different readers you may have.

TY for that additional info as well...

My wife loves it. She has a Kindle and she has filled it to capacity with books! Calibre has helped immensely.

What I like is the ability to hunt for bargains, and then remove the drm's and load them onto my iPad, which I love to read from.

Great find, Doc.  Thanks.

I've been using it for a while now and it does exactly what it's supposed to do. What more can one ask, especially from a free application?

For a price (but worth it).

This article is why you are DA MAN Doc.  I found out about Calibre a couple of weeks ago as I was researching how to convert Kindle to Ebooks. (I am not buying anything from Barnes and Noble because they are stupid and dishonest).  Did I run over here and tell everyone about it?  Nope, did not think to!  But you did!

Personal Testimony - Even the pay for plug ins are worth it!  A definite asset to people with e-readers!
