Ramblings of an old Doc

Well, assuming there’ll be cell reception and assuming you’re able to send, this app “I’m OK!” is really a wonderful thing.

#imok will let your emergency contacts know whether you are o.k. or #need help, not and need help. It will even let them know where you are with the #loc if you need help.

“Once you sign up for I'm OK! you'll add your emergency contacts and receive a verification text message from a phone number you'll want to save. In an emergency situation, you'll send a text message to that number and your contacts will be notified almost immediately. The message can be anything you want, but sending #imok or #needhelp will register the correct status with the I'm OK! service and be more useful. Additionally, you can use the #loc hash tag to send latitude and longitude coordinates along with your message in case you need someone to come find you.” – Adam Dachis

Think of how smart this is. It can greatly help find you if you need help in a chaotic situation, and save your life. Also, it can decrease the load on possibly swamped communications lines with some actually useful info. I don’t wish to get into the “I don’t want to be tracked” thing.

So be smart. Get this free app for your smart phone, if you believe it to be useful since it’s free. Your mom will sleep better knowing you cared enough to keep her from worrying.

It works via SMS. If you have a Blackberry you’ll need to download the app at their site and follow the instructions there.

There might even be a way (in the future) to fix it for any SMS enabled phone, and if that happens I hope I find out so I can inform you about it. I believe it’s that useful.
