Ramblings of an old Doc

Mozilla has gotten this one out fast, and slightly ahead of schedule. Only 12 weeks since ff4 debuted.

Also, just like ff4, ff5’s rendering of Forums sucks.

The final version of Firefox 5 is now available for download on Mozilla's ftp server, just 12 weeks after the last re-up. The latest incarnation brings with it support for CSS animation and a more easily accessible do-not-track setting -- now available at the top of the privacy pane -- but won't see much in the way of GUI enhancements. Of course, if you want to play it safe, and avoid any last-minute tweaks, you can always hold off until version 5 gets official, but what's the fun in that? – Engadget

According to Neowin.net:

  • Support for CSS transitions has been added
  • The preference for "Do Not Track" has been moved to aid easier discoverability by users
  • Improvements for canvas, JavaScript, and networking performance, and memory usage
  • Improved standards support for HTML5, XHR, MathML, SMIL, and canvas
  • Improvements to spell checking for various languages
  • Improvements to Linux desktop environment integration
  • Performance improvements for background tabs
  • WebGL fixes: a fix for cross-domain textures and a fix to address the memory stealing issue

Thanks for the Pale Moon links. I've been using it for a day now, and with a few add-ons I got it set up just how I like it. The only minor annoyances are that one (or several) add-ons seem to have disabled the 'notify when closing more tabs' check, and that the status bar changes color with the controls and tabs bar, making the UI look quite ugly in most cases.

Also, I know this is a firefox thing but still, how pretentious is it to call skins 'personas' that you can 'wear'. Juck.

Quite correct, I didn't like the skin color changes.

I'm using Firefox 3.5.15 and it works just great as well as all the extension/addons...anything after that just seemed to slow down so I switched back. If it ain't broke...

Interesting, it took the Linux distro I use the same amount of time to put out Firefox 5 as it took Pale Moon 5 to be released.

I tried FF5 again and it's okay, so long as I disable Windowblinds for it.  So it's using the old retro-style plain titlebar.

I keep going back to FF (I use Chrome right now) and I am constantly disappointed in how slow it is.  Chrome is lightning fast on my system, with FF, I can sit there and count waiting for pages to load.  IMO the newer versions of FF are as bloated as IE.

I'd think it has to do perhaps with the number of extensions and how slowly they might be loading... some take up to 45 sec.

No problems with WB skinning PM5 here on XP (except MenuBar & its menus - but that's not new).  Looks like all the add-ons still work, as well (I gather it's more '4.0.8' than 5 anyway).
