Ramblings of an old Doc

Counting on people’s voyeuristic “Trainwreck” (who doesn’t rubberneck at a road accident?)psychology and the “need to feed” and keep up on what’s going on in Japan, a brand new click-jacking scam has surfaced on facebook.

This clickjacking/survey scam lures users in with supposed raw footage of the tsunami that hit Japan after the earthquake. The message contains a link to the page hosting the video purportedly shot by a CNN crew, or discovered on an abandoned camera.

According to Sophos, the mouse-click on the video is hijacked, the victim unknowingly "Likes" the content and thus perpetuates the spreading of the scam. Then, they are asked to complete a survey in order to see the video, which generates revenue for the scammers.

The milk of human kindness is overflowing. If you’ve fallen victim to this, notify your friended people, and your cell phone carrier (if on a mobile device) to alert them as to spurious charges. Also, sort out your RSS feeds and clean out the bad ones.

The only videos I've seen of the tsunami were in the yahoo news. One was taken from a defense force helicopter and two others were amateur videos taken as the tsunami rolled in. One included the latest explosion at the nuclear site. I think I posted an update there.
