Ramblings of an old Doc

First, you've undoubtedly noticed Reporter Winky. My special thanks to Xiandi for allowing me to use her art in my posts.

On my last post I showed how to create a Windows 7 themepack. But what if you want to use the wallpapers of any themepack separately?

Well if you are using  7-Zip as your extraction utility, it shouldn’t be a problem! Simply right click on the themepack file and select “Extract”.

But if you are not using 7-Zip, the you may have to first apply that themepack and then navigate to the folder where the themepack stores the desktop wallpapers.

This folder is a hidden folder and hence you may have to first select ‘Show hidden files & folder’ option from the Explorer Folder Options.

Having done this, navigate to the following folder:

C:/Users/Username/AppData/Local/Microsoft/Windows/Themes/

Here you will see a bunch of theme folders. Select the theme folder, whose wallpapers you need and open the DesktopBackground folder.

You will see the desktop wallpapers of that themepack there!

Then just "copy to" or "move"  it/them to your destination folder.

I've been trying to figure out how to do this ever since i got my laptop. DrJBHL ... you just made my day. I got some beautiful walls in there I want to use. lol

Unfortunately only the .themes show. No theme folders. And I did apply the theme first.

You might like to try this out as well, Uvah...you can make your own themepacks... https://forums.wincustomize.com/403435

You can also change the file extension from "themepack" to "zip". Then just double click on the zip file and extract the files you want.

You will need to have "hide extensions for known file types" unchecked in folder options to see the file extension to rename it.

I have that one unchecked. I learned that one here awhile ago. I also tried changing the file extension. No luck. It just unzips back to the .theme.

Hide desktop icons

PrtScr --> open image editor --> paste

Oops, I forgot that winrar was associated to zip files on my system.

Never mind about changing the extension...it may not work.

I don't understand why you're having such problems navigating to the theme file, Uvah. The path is right there.

C:/Users/Username/AppData/Local/Microsoft/Windows/Themes/

double click then copy to or just move to.

on Jan 03, 2011

I'm not having problems going there. See.

This is the theme folder. I know how to navigate in Windows. All I'm saying is that there are only the .themes, no individual folders inside.

on Jan 03, 2011

OK...just enter them you'll  see 2 folders. don't open the  .ini file.

Right click> open on that folder and it'll show the walls in it.

on Jan 03, 2011

There are no folders to enter. No .ini to open. Right clicking won't open them. I clicked on preview and that brings up MS Photoviewer which does not recognize the file type. Clicking on the .theme only brings up the personalization in control panel. I tried this before and this is the solution I found. Same as in XP and Vista

C:\Windows\Web\Wallpapers. Inside here is where the folders are.

Senility strikes again. I had completely forgotten about this. Sorry.

Do you have Windows Seven Themepacks?

Here's the path:

C:/Users/Username/AppData/Local/Microsoft/Windows/Themes/

not

Go to your Windows Explorer and drill down.

Just went there Doc, I don't see any themepacks. Where do I get themepacks?

on Jan 03, 2011

If you save your own theme it goes to the location doc posted. If you want the Microsoft themes they are here.

C:\Windows\Resources\Themes

Just went there Doc, I don't see any themepacks. Where do I get themepacks?

You can obtain the Themepacks here: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows/downloads/personalize/themes

then, to extract walls from the themepacks go to:

C:/Users/Username/AppData/Local/Microsoft/Windows/Themes/

After you download these themepacks, and right click your desktop and choose Personalize, a window like this will open:

Incidently, you can also create Themepacks  (no one's noticed that post from today )  over here: https://forums.wincustomize.com/403435

on Jan 04, 2011

My first screenshot shows where the themepacks are. My second screenshot shows where you can get the individual walls in separate folders.

Bottom one shows wall moved to a folder I made in downloads.

I'm not trying to be a pain. I'm just showing you.

BTW ... you still made my day Doc. Showing me how to create .themes. You still Da Man
