Wouldn't it be nice to subdivide the Wallpaper Section of Wincustomize.com into a Regular and Widescreen Sections? Would that encourage folks to produce resolutions of 1440x900 and on up
including twin screens, etc.?

I think you can put wide screen walls in the 'dual monitor' category.

There are by the nature of things, I suppose, "lumpers" and "splitters". I chose to split off 1440x900 desktops (and others) from the "dual monitor" category because ther is only one screen, and half a desktop defeats the artist's original intention (or vision).

I make a widescreen size among the sizes I make my walls. I believe the reason there aren't as many as you'd like is the fact that there aren't as many widescreen users and people tend to make a wall according to the size of their own screen. I have been making walls for a couple years now and until I got my widescreen laptop, I never included a widescreen size. I also think if you look at the descriptions of the walls you will see that more and more are including widescreen sizes. I include 5 sizes for each wall and some include even more than that.

I just wish people would start making walls for resolutions higher than 1024x768. That is NOT hi res! I go to look for official walls for BSG or something like that and the highest they have is 1024x768 or something awful like 1152x900 or whatever the heck it is. It is so much better to make things for a truly hi res and to stretch it down than it is to make something all small and try to stretch it up, looks terrible.

Most people who create a wallpaper tend to do it in the res that they use.
Of course it depends on the type of wall...but a full scene panoramic type of wall is impossible for someone using 1024x768 res. They just can't visualize something on their monitor to create a 1920x1200 wall.
Sure, they can make an abstract in Bryce or C4D in a larger res and it will probably look ok if they crop it right, but for the most part, a really nice looking wall in a high res needs to be created by someone with a large monitor, and sized down, not the other way around.
24" plus monitors are becoming more popular so there will be more walls available for them, but they are still in the minority.
Sites like InterfaceLift tend to have a fair amount of quality walls in larger res. Check around, it takes some time right to find good hi res walls.

I agree with Boss. With more and more new screens in Wide mode + Laptops which are now quite all in wide screen, it would be a good thing to subdivise the section.
... and, as far as i'm over here, i get one question: is there a way to convert pictures in 4/3 format to wide format without distorsion ??
Any tips for it (i get thousands of walls in 4/3 with some of them i'd like to get in wide because thers were not done like this when origanlly made ...)
And another one: what about Logons (XP & Vista) and bootskins ?

With my latest wall, Clamming near New London Ledge Light, I started including 1440x900
based on requests for same. A separate section for wide screen would be good in that it would keep the download sizes smaller not having to include 5 or 6 sizes in one zip.

I would also like any tips on how this could be done (if possible). I have a widescreen laptop, and my res is kind of weird: 1280x768. I have a lot of walls made in 1024x768 that I'd love to have in widescreen. Any help would be much appreciated, thanks.

I think you'd be better off finding walls in 1280x960 or 1280x1024 and cropping off the top and bottom of them, or using any widescreen res...1920x1200, 1680x1050, or 1440x900, which all correspond to 1280x800, which is pretty close to your res. and the difference shouldn't be noticeable.
A 1024x768 can be resized to 1280x960 and then cropped, but the increase in size will degrade the quality.

Note that the program Automatic Wallpaper Changer does a GREAT job of sizing up/down wallpapers on the fly to odd resolutions. For example, you can choose to have it "worse fit" which is to size full on horizontal, maintaining aspect, so that the top and bottom are cut off. Or you can choose the "best fit" option which would leave you with black space on the sides (on a widescreen monitor), etc. Depending on preference, it should do the trick nicely for anyone who wants it.

Oh and you can have it change the wallpaper as well, haha.
PS NASA have some super hires imagery that makes for tasty high res desktops.

I use 1280x800 resolution, and most Desktop X themes do not work well with this size. It sure would be nice if there was a section for this resolution!
