Ramblings of an old Doc
Nirsoft does it again

After reading the review in gHacks, I gave FullEventLogView a chance and was pleasantly surprised because of all the filters one can apply via the app. But first, it's portable and is an .exe file. Zero dlls, etc. to add before using it, and essentially zero disc space...it can live on a stick. Also, it displays all events until you apply a time interval to it, which allows you to hone into the problem a lot more quickly.

If you want to load the events from remote computer on your network or from event log files (.evtx), you should use the 'Choose Data Source' window (F7).

For a full description of the filters, and how to use the lower pane works (a description of the event that has various modes available,

  • Show Event Description: Displays the full description of the event. Some event descriptions are too long for watching them in the 'Description' column, so you can view the long event description in the lower pane.
  • Show Event Data + Description: Displays the full description of the event and additional data stored in this event.
  • Show Event XML: Displays the full XML of the event.

I'd suggest you visit the Nirsoft website, and (ulterior motive) cruise though all of the free utilities there...all excellent:

Imo, this is a 'must have' because it's way better than the Windows event log, and really can hone in faster and more easily on any problem event, the software or process involved and it has an adjustable 'refresh rate' allowing truly real time viewing.
