Free BitDefender Anti-Ransomware Tool

You all know about ransomware…and its destructive capabilities.

So, BitDefender is offering free a tool to give at least limited protection against three of the most common varieties of ransomwate: CTB-Locker, Locky and TeslaCrypt. It’s all of 4.5 Mb in size.

As Martin Bormann of gHacks noted, though:

“It should be clear from this that Bitlocker Anti-Ransomware does not protect against all ransomware attacks. Trend Micro lists dozens of ransomware families on its website for instance, and one question that you will have to ask yourself is whether it makes sense to run the program on your machine” – gHacks

It’s now on my system because despite there being many variants, these are the most common.

You should however maintain backups isolated from your active system. I can’t emphasize that enough.

Suggest you read the reviews here before installing Malwarebytes Anti-Ransomware.

And HitmanPro.Alert is worth taking a look at. I've been using the free version for a couple of years & am considering upping to the paid app.

A mall question/problem. I have the "Bitdefender anti-ransom" and it is a large box that sits on my desktop. Checking preferences, it tells me that if I minimize it, it is still there...but it does not show in my task bar nor is it running when I look in task manager. Anyone else have this?

You can choose "minimize to the system tray on startup", or "minimize to system tray when closing"...

It's under the app's settings, Barb.

You can choose "minimize to the system tray, or minimize to system tray when closing...

I know... I am saying that when I minimize to the system tray, it stops running or so it seems, because it disappears and does not show in the task manager any more.

I have it now.... I wanted to keep it visible sometimes, but it seems I have to have the last two sliders on *on, instead of off*. Thank you Doc!
