Ramblings of an old Doc

Engadget reported it, and Yahoo confirmed it…Yahoo’s displaying for a small test group the following message: "Uh oh... We are unable to display Yahoo Mail. Please disable Ad Blocker to continue using Yahoo mail." The original complainants were on Adblock/Adblock Plus Forums from folks who had to disable their adblockers to access their “free” email.

Yahoo isn’t trailblazing anything with this. It is something which is becoming more and more common…sites demanding disabling of adblockers to get to that site’s services…even The Washington Post.

So…just to let you know it’s coming…and there’s not too damned much one can do about it, either. As for disabling Java (to prevent infection through Java applets) – I haven’t seen any reports as to whether this will prevent getting your email…but it wouldn’t surprise me one bit…or byte.

They're just slowly putting us in a nice little box.

meh, whatever, fuck yahoo..

The end result is just an arms race ending with sophisticated users not seeing ads and the 90% having a shittier browsing experience.  Pretty much how the rest of real life already is anyway...  The place where this really sucks though is at work, where users don't actually have all that much control over the terminals they're using...

Yahoo can stick their fechen email where the sun don't shine.  Ditched 'em years ago cos of all the ads and spam they generated.  Nope, there's no way I'd ever go back to that.  If something isn't ad/spam free, or can't be made to be, then I simply don't/won't use it.

I was recently referred to a site which demanded that I disabled Adblock in order to complete a purchase, and I figured "fech that, it's not happening", and went elsewhere instead.  I refuse to do business under those terms.

My email - which is yahoo.co.nz - downloads to my Outlook no problem. For a good year or two I find myself stuck in the Eternal Log-In Loop From Hell whenever I try to log-in to Yahoo! so tend not to use Yahoo!'s website for email anymore.

I've certainly seen a rise in the number of "we detect you have Adblocker. Please turn it off and take our advertisements, which allow this site to operate" websites over the last year. Some websites I frequent have mooted a subscription to deal with this issue but haven't actually made the jump yet.

I've been running Yahoo email forever (OK, a long damn time). GMail wasn't an option at the time. Just ISP-based email, AOL, and Yahoo. I'm definitely not a fan and don't recommend it to anyone.

But I will say that, thankfully, I run an ad-blocker and have had no issues so far. This is wrong-headed enough I think they'll give it up. But I firmly believe that ads on webpages is going to go through some kind of evolution soon.

Sure they will. They don't want the money from advertising, right?

I don't care what kind of 'evolution' ads may go through, if I can't use Adblocker to filter them out, then I'll simply exit the site and go elsewhere.  There's nothing worse than flashing banner ads right beside/near something of interest... not only are they an unnecessary visual distraction, they also play havoc with my vertigo.
