Apple OS X users…a very important security fix has been issued for NTP.

This update is very important to prevent remote code execution.

OS X NTP Security Update
  • ntpd

Available for: OS X Mountain Lion v10.8.5, OS X Mavericks v10.9.5, OS X Yosemite v10.10.1

Impact: A remote attacker may be able to execute arbitrary code

Description: Several issues existed in ntpd that would have allowed an attacker to trigger buffer overflows. These issues were addressed through improved error checking.

To verify the ntpd version, type the following command in Terminal: what /usr/sbin/ntpd. This update includes the following versions:

    • Mountain Lion: ntp-77.1.1
    • Mavericks: ntp-88.1.1
    • Yosemite: ntp-92.5.1

To access and install the update, choose Software Update from the Apple menu and click the Update button next to the latest Security Update entry. No restart is required.

I don't mean to be facetious here... hehe, orright, maybe I do... but the best way to stop attacks on Apple gear is not to have it.

Seriously, I just wish that the dropkicks who keep coming up with malware and the like would get severe shocks from their systems... you know, the 240v typre with lots of AMPS.

To each his own, starkers.

There are many here with Apple stuff, and I sure as hell don't want them hurt.

Yeah, it was just a bit of tongue-in-cheek and was not intended to detract from your message.  I'm glad you look out for our members with information such as this, whether it be for Apple, Windows or Linux OSes/applications.

I may have served it up about Apple over in my thread, 'And Another Reason Apple IS Despicable', but in no way am I taking a shot at members here who happen to have and enjoy using Apple products... unless they're a fanboi.

Yeah Dr Guy and I do like to "tweak their noses" for sport sometimes..

Seriously, though, if I do have a beef, it's with the architects and proliferators of malware and other crap we'd rather not see out there in the wild, just waiting to infect innocent people with its evil spawn. For mine, there needs to be far more serious penalties for these crimes... including the removal of certain body parts to discourage repeat offences.  Yeah, I know it sounds barbaric, but so is what they do, and being nutless, fingerless is the price they should pay for the pain they cause.

Anyway, I'll get down off my soapbox now and go get myself a cuppa.

is this the one where apple auto installs for you (no need for reboot either)

starrkers, MY preference for the penalty for such shit would be skull removal OR neck removal, (preferably without anasthetic) either would have the desired effect of them not repeating the offence.

alaknebs...yes, it is. Apple never does this but this update was considered that important for the security of the OS.
