Windows 8.1 Users: Install the Spring Update or “No more patches for you!”.

Yes…it seems the patch nazi has spoken.

“Windows 8.1 users who haven't yet installed the major update released by Microsoft in April, will stop receiving updates starting tomorrow. Microsoft had announced that the update which was earlier known as the "Spring" update would be a mandatory update for Windows 8.1 users and had a given a buffer period for users to update to it. After launching the major update in April, Microsoft set a deadline for users in a blog post, which asserted, "Failure to install this Update will prevent Windows Update from patching your system with any future updates starting with Updates released in May 2014 (get busy!)." – neowin

MS then put off the deadline to 6/10. Check your calendar.

Interestingly, Windows 8 users are not required to be on the latest and greatest version of Windows, although the mainstream support for the OS might end in the near future. If you have automatic updates turned on, you have nothing to worry about. For those of you who install patches manually, make sure you have the spring update installed, otherwise, you machine could become vulnerable to known exploits. –ibid

From what I understand, all Windows 8.1 PCs sold after April will already have the update ...and for any that may have slipped through the cracks, automatic updates should remedy the matter.

I'm going to go out on a limb here but with Microsoft doing what it is doing I would say Kona that should not happen. If it did you should be able to take it back to the retailer without any questions asked. Then there is this other thing, if the buyer leaves the store with a new PC and didn't confirm what version of OS was installed, well that's just STUPID.

meh. support for win 8 will end sooner than support for win 7.

heh...even though XP is officially unsupported now, it too will probably receive unofficial support longer than win 8.

meh.......in my experience those focused on life-cycles etc. tend to be those constantly resistant to change regardless of what that change might actually be.

...and so it goes for the late adopters of progress.

but progres is only when you achieve a state better than previously had. If such a state is not achieved, it is called 'regress'. See win 8 for more details.

In threads posted long ago now (and which have likely died since) I listed quite a few of the under-the-hood enhancements (ie. progress) that Windows 8 has over its predecessors (including but not limited to how much better it performs especially on older hardware than ALL previous iterations of an MS OS on that machine). Of course that may not be recognized by everyone. See personal opinion for details.

For the record, I am currently running Windows 8.1 on an old Dell XP rig with a P4 cpu and 3 GB ram and it runs beautifully.

For the record, I am currently running Windows 8.1 on an old Dell Inspiron E1505 Laptop with a 1.66 GHz cpu and it runs sweetly. It also came out with XP on it.

For the record, I am currently running XP on and old Dell rig, just so I don't give XP a complex.....

IMHO, 8.1 runs better on an old XP rig than XP does. YMMV.

Everybody has Windows 8 and 8.1 running nice and fast. Except me. Windows 8 runs really, really slow on my hardware. But I've said this before.

Suppose I will give Windows 8 another try when I can afford a WiFi adapter that runs on Windows 8. Mine does not.
