Ramblings of an old Doc

Interesting article at Neowin.

Looks like XP usage is dropping quickly: Down 3.38% in a month. I didn’t see sample size stats, though.

By far, the highest usage for XP is in China, with a significant persentage of those pirated. Recently, China asked MS to extend XP support. That deserves a “Chutzy Award”.

Linux keeps trying at least.  1.73% and hanging on...

Linux does much better on the servers though. 31.8 'Officially', with the Unix-like OSes accounting for 66.8% of the Server Market Share.

Go Linux go!

Quoting benmanns, reply 38I know we are on Wincustomize and customization plays a factor, I do refer to general users with this text, folks that run windows in Aero or in classic, these guys do not spend hours inspecting the start menu, for wrong margin settings or bad cropping like some of us here do and did, after the point of opening it, they will launch the executable and their mission is done. OK and they shutdown. I seriously hope that some bury the hatchet and stop the complains.

Skinners are not 'just' interested in changing graphics....we have always been heavily invested into the concept of modding the actual GUI functionality too.  Windowblinds [for example] does/can do a heck of a lot more than paint pretty pictures on GUI elements....if that's all you think it does you're selling the proggy short.

BECAUSE skinners are closely involved with the OS GUI they will rile at ANY absurdity/stupidity that MS imposes on the User.

Alternate Shells exist because even the 'normal' GUI isn't necessarily ideal.

Amongst this bunch here on WC you'll also find a very high percentage of people who DON'T use the file managing component of Explorer.exe.   They'll choose a 3rd party alternative....because again they are seen as an 'enhancement'.

Sure we can all sit here and ONLY shake our heads at MS for ruining 8 with a mobile-phone GUI...and stick with 7...

...or we can correctly call MS 'fucking idiots...get it right' and provide a voice of expert competence that demonstrates exactly why 8's market share is so plainly pathetic.

Jafo im in no doubt that some folks take advantage of such and im aware that windowblinds can do more...
But for the rest im not sure that applys to the "average" user i think that is something more advanced even if its not.Progs like Xplorer, FC and such are mostly used by people that now their stuff.
I still do occasionally repair PC´s but mostly only build them for my circle of friends. (that has many reasons one would be that i dont like to build up crap and listen to the complains afterwards) - (i7,16GB ram, dual sli and a 600W PSU) yeah right throw out cash for the good things and pay 50 USD for the MB and pick a 600W PSU...
Just recently i build a rig and was told to install windows7..
So i did and i can tell you that was a nightmare... Windows7 rejected the USB3 drivers and rejected the new Marvel driver.
But thats not all..
Long story short: I ended up installing windows7 perfectly fine, then i started (updating) and then the rig rebooted in a happy loop. Bootmgr failure
I knew how to repair it,but a repair with just the windows7 disk wasnt possible.

After 3 attempts i stuck in the windows8 disk of mine- no problems
I ended up installing windows7 once more and decieded to download the service pack manual and installed it after i disbled auto updates, and it worked.
Just by doing all these unneeded steps im unwilling to go back.

It won't run FSX on ultra/anything. [and that's almost a decade old]

Nothing does....

The new Metro is equally even 2 titans have problems running it on a high resolution
I wonder how they plan to run it in 4K...

For this 'Desktop-PC-gamer' the need for a 'desktop' system has all but dissolved.

Only when they make one with a 27" monitor, 30" would even be better

Not to worry. The way things are headed, phones and tablets will be that large by years end. Just what I've always wanted, a phone with a display larger than my television.

So we take the TV with us and leave the phone at home. Cool.

I have been using 8 or 8.1 as my main OS for nearly a year now

I have been running Win 8/8.1 since the 1st public beta and have never looked back.  Purchased my 1st retail copy for 40 bucks, but have since paid full retail price for another copy for my 2nd rig... being it impressed me that much.

And yeah, Win 8 better utilises resources than previous Windows editions.  With my UEFI mobo and fast start enabled, I have a usable desktop in about 6-8 seconds after pressing the on button.  In fact, everything is so much faster/efficient under Win 8/8.1.

As for the desktop PC going away any time soon... bullsh!t.  Portable devices [phones, tablets, phablets] are just that... portable and incapable of processing the kinds of high-end tasks a desktop PC can.  While useful for the low-end tasks they were designed for, and I don't give a stuff what the iCrowd or so-called industry experts say, portable devices will likely never possess the power required to complete serious video production or editing, etc.

Long live the desktop PC.... and my next build will be a doozy. Ive been using AMD's for my last few builds, but my next is an Intel... a liquid cooled i7 4770K on a Gigabyte GA-Z87X UD5H mobo with 32Gb of Kingston 2400mhz DDR3 RAM.. and Win 8.1 on a 512Gb Samsung 840 Pro SSD.  I got a large chunck of the cost saved already and will start building in late Feb early March.

And this is the beasty of a tower it'll be going in....

Sexy looking case...

on Jan 05, 2014

Gidday Paul, 'tis good to see you again  Here's hoping all is well in the world for you and your good lady wife, may you both have a happy New Year.

Sexy looking case..

Yes, I saw one on display at a local PC store and immediately fell in love with it... and not just for the looks.  3 of its drive bays are hot swappable, meaning that I can easily exchange drives without having to 'safely remove' or rebooting. They wanted $399 for it so I researched and found one for $270 at my regular online store, which is just 30 mins down the motorway if I want to save delivery time and go pick things up.

Another thought I had is dual booting without actually dual booting.  I'm looking into sort of hot swapping OS drives so I could perhaps also run Win 7 without all that boot menu stuff slowing down startups.  Another thing about the Thermaltake Level 10 Full Tower is the oodles of room inside.  It easily accomodates the largest of video cards and running 2 or 3 in SLI formation would be a breeze, given the depth and breadth of the case.

Yeah, there's a lot to like about this case.  What's more, the cooling options are great with optional liquid cooling [which I have selected] 4 internal 23cm fans an 18cm rear fan and an optional 12cm bottom fan.  Oh, and the 23cm side panel fan is louvred so the breeze can be directed to either the CPU or the GPU's. Naturally, with liquid cooling for the CPU, I will opt to cool the graphics cards

As for the desktop PC going away any time soon... bullsh!t.

While the market for low end PC's may be declining, the market for high end PC enthusiast\gameing rigs seems to be growing. Chip Manufactures like Intel, AMD & Nivida are developing faster chip sets aimed at this market every year. As new chip set are released, aftermarket companies like Asus, MSI, Gigabyte.......etc......etc.....are also continuing to develop new high end products for the PC.

To me it's sort of like the gas guzzling raw power of an american muscle car vs the fine-tuned 'engineering' of an import!

Hardly a fair comparison......a PC with the same specs as your laptop would be almost as energy efficient and I doubt your laptop would even exist without the development of high end PC components, after all who would put the time and energy into the R@D required for components for such a small market.

Win8......while the interface right out of the box sucks, once you tweak it a little(Start8) it work really well, much better than any other Windows product accept maybe Win7. I'm running Win7 on three of my comp and will not upgrade them anytime soon. Running Win 8 on one PC and a Asus tablet and have nothing bad to say about the performance of Win8(I doubt the table would run very well with Win7).

Precisely!  These companies know what to produce to satisfy market damand, and while they have diversified to incorporate the portable device, the components for desktop PC's have had significant money and development invested in them despite a shift in market preferences.  Now companies like Intel, Nvidia and AMD would not be dedicating the huge resources required to develop and manufacture such components if there was no future in the market for them.

And let's not forget Apple and its latest contribution to the desktop PC http://store.apple.com/au/buy-mac/mac-pro  Now if the arse was going to fall out of the market I seriously doubt that Apple would have invested so much time, effort and money in developing such a beast... not to mention relocating its manufacture from China back to the United States.

The truth is, there will always be gamers, enthusiasts and businesses who will depend on the desktop PC to apply their particular trade/skill, etc.

Hey Philly, nice to see you again... and yeah, the case is a beauty alright.  I had seen it on various websites and the like, but once I had seen it up close and personal I knew I had to have it.  It has fantastic specs... and it's HUGE!  I mean, the guy showing it to me temporarily put in the longest graphics card they had in the store [14.3"] and there was still 3 to 4 inches to spare.  I have a Gigabyte ATI 7970HD at 11.2" in my current case, which is also a full tower [not small], and there's only about 2 inches spare, meaning this new one is ginormous and I'll have to modify my desk to accommodate it.

Hey Cap'n.......you got a license for that thing?

Nope, and I don't plan on getting one, either.  With an Intel i7 4770K under the hood, no copper's gonna catch me.  Hehe, when I took it for a test drive I found doing nought to 60 was possible in 2.2 seconds, so I'll be just cruisin' when the coppers give up the chase  Trouble was, though, to do corners at 90mph I had to press Control,Shift and hold my mouse real tight.

Another reason the Desktop won't disappear has nothing to do with specs.  A desktop system requires a LOT of extra physical energy to remove in terms of Theft.

Yeah, mine weighs a frickin' ton.  Well not really, but the case alone weighs 28.4lbs... with hardware installed it is 36.2lbs  However, that's not the only reason making it difficult to steal.  Let's just say that I used some screws and a would-be thief would find it difficult to remove from its slot in my desk. In fact, by the time he/she figured it out, it would have been quicker and easier just to have taken the whole desk.

I find it very odd that Microsoft's odd numbered OS's are the ones that really perform well.

That's just it.  Windows 8 performs better than any previous MS OS iteration to date.

People of course can find patterns wherever they choose to look but that 'pattern' concerning even/odd numbered MS OS's has been most decidedly 'broken' with Windows 8 (at least in the performance category).  How 'liked' or not Windows 8 is on it's 'look' may be an entirely different thing and may suit someone else's pattern.

my odd remark was intended as humor....
