Ramblings of an old Doc

The Guardian put out news of some interesting research.

What we always felt instinctively is true. Men are wired for perception and coordinated action (as you’d expect in a hunter) while women are wired for social skills and memory. This can be seen in the more numerous links between the right and left sides of the brain in females as opposed to males.

The neural maps (connectome maps) were observed using diffusion tensor MRI imaging. Here are the maps (men in blue women in gold):

male brain

female brain

These are typical results from 428 males and 521 females aged 8-22. The difference between the sexes become apparent in 14-17 year olds. This might suggest more of a hormonal origin rather than a cultural influence.

Anyway, this becomes more fascinating when one considers mental illness and mapping of pathways for problems such as Depression, Schizophrenia, etc. in males and females and how they respond to treatment with various medications, tailored to more specific pathways since there are differences in disease prevalence in males and females.

And yet we will still get ones that demand that men and women are the same. I am all for equality, but saying that is like saying a sports car and a truck are the same.

Flip side, I do agree that this is good information that will help with development and medication.

Not sure about a demand for

demand that men and women are the same.

I believe the logical/legal requisite is that they be treated equally with men (no gender discrimination) in the work place and under the law.

Or, in other words, Football and Facebook, respectively.

Yep, which I agree with. Its more of the ones that are demanding that men and women are carbon copies. We are not, as noted with brain scans. Its these that drive me up the wall.

Somethings take science to reveal what 'should' be obvious. Equality is fine but the differences between genders exist for a reason. Women are natural home makers, men are the providers. We go out and get the stuff and the women organize it, the basic premise. It is ingrained in the species to insure survival. Hunter/gatherers......how we began and how we still are albeit in a more 'modern sense'. Probably why its called' A no brainer'.

Do we need research for something that we all know.

on Dec 08, 2013

You don't "know" it's true or false until you prove it. Until then, you "suspect" it might be true or false. Example? The flat earth was accepted as true until proven false.

Besides, had you read the OP's last paragraph, you'd see why the research might prove a critical advancement to the treatment of illnesses of the central nervous system in men and women. For that reason alone, the research was very important.

Flat earth was never accepted by everybody at all for start.

on Dec 08, 2013

In terms of research yes I agree. The more we learn about those differences the better to pattern what is needed to overcome debilitating conditions that interfere with what should come naturally......if that makes any sense.

while women are wired for social skills and memory.

I guess I don't need to feel so bad about forgetting to put my pants on this morning.   (I actually did that, at least I didn't go outside.)

Looking at the brain maps, it also might explain the common perception that women are so more inclined to talk about their feelings than men are.  [Now stop wanting me to do that.]

The female brain looks scrambled...

I wonder how common it is for a male to have a brain wired like a woman, or vice-versa.

Timmaigh

I wonder how common it is for a male to have a brain wired like a woman, or vice-versa.

Exactly like that, I am sure, is a rarity but those are averages as some males are more social then your average woman and some females are more hunterious then your average male.

There's a lot of 'grey' in between.
