Ramblings of an old Doc

As part of Computrex 2012’s announcements, Asus has just announced that it plans to release the “Transformer AiO”.

So, what is it? It is a dual OS device capable of running Android and Windows 8. It is an 18.4” Desktop (and possibly a Tablet as well) that runs both OS’s.

Dana Wollman at engadget reports that it boots to Windows 8 (as the default), and transitions into Android after a button is pressed.

“…the Transformer AiO seems rooted in Windows 8: it boots into Win8, and transitions into Android only after you press a button. In addition to running two OS', the AiO has dual form factors: you can use it as a traditional all-in-one if you like, or you can detach the screen from the base and use it as a wireless display (slash, an absurdly large 18-inch tablet).” - Dana Wollman, engadget.com

As for availability? Clearly after W8 goes RTM, later this year. No word on cost.

What does it look like? First remember this is a prototype. Well, this picture comes from engadget where a nice vid is also available:

This is interesting for a few reasons.

First, will this be a MS Certified device? To me, the only reason that should be important to folks is the warranty. Maybe a modified one will be available. That will be of major importance in marketing for Asus.

Second, If they’re doing it for Android, will they be doing it for Linux? I certainly don’t expect to see it for W8/iOS.

Third, an 18.4” Tablet? Seems to negate the “portability” factor, unless there are major weight adjustments being made, like SSD’s, and a different alloy body (Magnesium?) along with external optical/etc. drives which are located on the dock. This is a prototype unit with scads of connectivity, 1920x1080p.

I would think this is a “unifying” product: Desktop, laptop and Tablet features. It’s a gamble, but not a bad one, in my opinion. Might just be a great one.

I recommend you watch the vid at engadget.
