Ramblings of an old Doc

No secret – I love to ‘edit’ photos.

Another secret? Not everyone can afford Photoshop and various plugins to create ‘amazing’ art. Well, You might not create “amazing art”, but you will be able to do fun things to those holiday photos which you’re probably about to start shooting…

How about a free piece of editing software which offers:

  • Frames
  • Change size
  • You can add texts and other items while editing with PhotoScape
  • Auto Contrast
  • Balloons
  • Bloom
  • Brightness controller
  • Combining
  • Cropping
  • Filter
  • Mosaic
  • Vignetting Filter
  • Support for creating Animated GIF
  • Clone Stamp
  • Red eye Removal
  • And many more…

It offers various tools to do this:

  • Viewer: It can view photos from your folder or create a slideshow
  • Batch editor: You can batch edit multiple photos
  • Page: You can merge multiple photos on the page frame to create one concluding photo
  • Combine: You can even attach multiple photos vertically or horizontally to generate single concluding photo
  • Animated GIF: Creates a final animated photo in .GIF format
  • Print: It can print portrait shots and passport shots.
  • Splitter: Splitter can wedge a photo into numerous pieces
  • Screen Capture: A great tool for screen capturing.
  • Color Picker: Color picking becomes very easy with PhotoScape.
  • Rename: You can change photo file names in batch mode
  • Raw Converter: It can convert RAW to JPG format
  • Face Search: An awesome feature that can find similar faces on the Internet

Here… Take a peek:  http://www.photoscape.org/ps/main/index.php

Honestly? I figure this is just about as good as you’re going to find for free. Some really nice screenshots here: http://www.photoscape.org/ps/main/screenshot.php  saved me the trouble of doing it.

Could the GUI be spiffier? Yes. Does it matter? Not one iota. The “Help” page even provides videos demonstrating the “how to” by list of feature.

Hope this helps with those photos!

Quick question for those in the know about these programs:  Would GIMP be a tool with which one could do most of the things photoscape does?  Thanks

Those who love Gimp say it does. I don't believe that, so I agree with Dave (please G-d, don't strike me down). I started learning on Ps 7, and now continue on Ps 12. It's the most incredible graphics program imaginable. In its next version there'll even be an "unblur" for blurred photos.

I have a manual fully 2" (at least) thick on it. No. No way Gimp does what Ps does.

Sounds like your talking about PhotoShop. Elana was talking about Photoscape.

I point this out cuz I'm also curious in learning what PhotoShop has that GIMP doesn't.

Don't know what I was reading you are correct and I'm sorry. Can't answer her question because I don't know what this program does yet. However it also is free so give it a try if you wish.

Nice program. You can't really criticise something free and this useful.

Actually Elana was taking about Gimp. Please read her post again.
LoL

She was asking how GIMP compared to PhotoScape. Doc talked about PhotoShop, not PhotoScap.

I use GIMP, so was curious to hear peoples answer.

In my post, I transposed scape with shop. But if you read his post again, you will see that Elk clearly knew Elana was talking about GIMP

ANY graphic program is good.

Photoshop is simply the industry standard...and often simply an employment pre-requisite [knowledge of].

What makes good graphics is a GOOD ARTIST.  The program is simply a tool.

Here's one I saw recently....[Photoshop]

I think reversing that would be true....

That guy Nico is amazing. I saw a demo with MS Paint as well (a car if I remember)... but the has rather obvious Graphics training... no one just pops into Paint and does vectors...
