Ramblings of an old Doc

Lightstar pm’d me with this announcement he found:

“If you are good with Photoshop or are a photographer, this is your chance to get your work and your name in front of a global audience while retaining full rights to all your images. Send Microsoft your art or photography, and they might use it in the gallery, either as a wallpaper (a standalone desktop image) or a full theme (a set of desktop images and colors).
Here's how to send us your work:

  • First, please review the guidelines to make sure what you're sending is the right size, the right format, and is appropriate for our site.
  • Send us your work in email. Attach one image per email. If you send five pictures, send five emails.
  • Don't zip or compress your art.
  • Include this info in each email:
-Your name (how you want to be credited)
-A brief description of your art or photo
    -Your preferred contact email name
-The address of your website, if you have one
  • Click the Submit button below (this will launch your email program if you have one), or just use this address: winpgal@microsoft.com. By emailing your work to this address, you agree to the Terms of Use.
  • Still have questions? Check out the FAQ.

Start sending your images. Maybe your theme will end up on the Most popular tab of the Windows 7 themes page!”

Just be smart and copyright your picture to protect it!

Thanks, Master Lightstar !!!

I'm genuinely curious if people participate in things like this. On the one hand, it sounds like they're just asking for free work from people. On the other hand... that's pretty damn good exposure for artists.

If your work is copyrighted, as I suggested in the OP, no worries.

Let me get this straight. Microsoft craps on the people who filled their gadget gallery by just dumping all their work but wants to solicit user created content in the form of wallpapers?

What a crock!

Gee whiz, Wiz... only doing my job... and trying to encourage skinners at the same time.

On one hand folks need money and want to have and win contests but gaining a foothold in the wider graphics world is no good?

If I were any good, I'd enter in a skinny NYC second.

I thought one's works if uploaded was already copyrighted ... so, what would one have to do to copyright it?

just state in the E-Mail that it is copyrighted? is there a website to copyright your art?

There are probably several sites for copyrighting your work. I think the most popular option is Creative Commons. I also discovered one called Myows.

I know and I applaud you for it, sorry Doc and LS. I'm still a little PO'd about recent events centered around MS's galleries.

You have more than casual knowledge of PS and some of your work is in the galleries here. Good enough for WC is good enough for the rest of the world.

Why not give it a go?

Thank you, Starcandy.

All art has inherent copyright.  You make it...it has it.

If copyright is ever disputed all you need is evidence of authorship...

So save everything as a "smart object"?  Would that constitute proof?

on Oct 11, 2011

Most photo editing programs have a Metadata field where Copyright information can be set and saved with the photo.

Bridge does, never looked for it in Ps.

Thanks, Hankers.

If you find it let me know.
