Ramblings of an old Doc

Firstly, “May you be enscribed in The Book of Life For The Coming Year.”

This is the greeting of one person of Jewish faith to another during the “Nine Days of Awe” between Rosh HaShana (The New Year) and Yom HaKippurim” (The Day of Atonement).

I however wish to extend this to all here (to everyone, actually). My best regards and thoughts to all and all dwelling in your houses and your loved ones.

I also wish to ask forgiveness from all those I have offended during the past year. Doc is all too human and errs all too frequently.

I extend forgiveness as well, freely and with warmth.

This is set to publish today, as I won’t be engaging in my regular activities for the next day.

Now to my job.

The venerable and laudable Koop passes this along to all via me.

Firstly, “May you be enscribed in The Book of Life For The Coming Year.”

I hope this doesn't come off as combative, etc, as that's not my intent, but I have a question re: this.  Is there some portion of the Jewish faith that indicates that you could be in the book of life one year and not the next?  I'm really not looking to derail this all that much; just curious.  Thanks.

pacov... I think you'll find it's much the same as "Happy New Year".  That, too does not pre-suppose that you are obliged NOT to have a happy one prior or after, only that the current one will be happy.

"Happy birthday"...."Merry Xmas"...they all refer to currency.

'May your chickens turn to emus and kick your dunny down" ....that'll be all about sooner rather than later, too....

God figures this stuff year by year. That's the point of atonement, to get rid of sin that reduces your chance. And the shofar deafens Shaitan so he can't use your confessions against you. So, yes, in the sense that one year you might do fine and the next you really make yourself a target. Of course, you get crossed out eventually, so yes in that you die some year. Is it all predetermined with no chance for change? No.

I thought the point was that blessing or not blessing is a courtesy. God knows how you choose to live your life and what your ultimate fate will be. We are simply saying, "gosh I hope you get in too."

Thanks for the explanations, fellas.

The quick answer is yes. People are inscribed for varying lengths of time each year (according to the religious). No derailment... quite the opposite.

Indeed.... perfect.

Not really the same as a Happy New Year... more gravity due to the nature of the Day, but for all... just the very best of wishes: Life.
