Ramblings of an old Doc

If I don’t succeed in getting the YouTube Vid into this, the vid and article appear on Lifehacker’s  homepage.

It poses a very interesting question… what’s going to happen to skinning with the advent of Windows 8 on PC’s?

You see, There isn’t a Start Menu and taskbar, nor traditional windows. There’s a Start Page, and basically a Smart Phone interface with tiles and the weather tile appears to be a widget.

So what do you think?

To me at least, this diverges a good deal from prior build leaked (and employees fired) where there was a traditional taskbar and orb. Now it looks like they're using "Tiles" or an equivalent with a Winflag button (replacing the orb) to return to the Start Page...

There were other buttons (on the right side on the "Tiles" type bar or dock) but their function wasn't demo'd.

I'd prefer Vista over this crud anyday.  I don't even do social networking or use the cloud.  I like all my programs & settings & customizations stored LOCALLY on my PC.  Soon, the PC may not be so "personal" anymore.

And FYI, where the hell can you use a wallpaper?  Windows?!  With no Wallpaper?!  Let alone no Deskscapes video walls, is just sad.   There just might be a new petition on saving Windows 7.  Just like how there was a petition for saving XP when Vista came about.

The only thing I like about Win8 (not found in the video) is the ribbon interface for Explorer.  Somebody needs to write a 3rd party utility to allow XP, Vista, and 7 users the option for a ribbon-based Explorer.

I'm just  speaking from a Desktop PC perspective.  This OS is obviously slated for tablets more so than PCs.

*end Windows 8 rant*

EDIT:  Just saw reply #58's screenshot.  Reverting back to the old desktop.  Maybe it won't be so bad after all (unless Stardock apps aren't compatible).

They'll be adapted... doesn't look all that different from 7, VistArtXPosed. It's gonna be fine. You'll see.

Jafo, not sure if you're aware, Technet copies are Retail Editions.

Yes, but not from a store on 'the high street'....

Quoting Fistalis, reply 48Which is where I'm at personally.. why would I upgrade to 7 when 8 is on the horizon?

Because 7 actually works properly.

No other MS OS ever did....

Odd.... 'cause Vista works better on my system, than the bloated Win7. I have never had -any- problems with Vista.
I see absolutely no reason what so ever (for me) to downgrade to Win7 or even try Win8.

I think a lot of Vista's problems (or better, the problems people had with Vista) came from releasing it too soon. It should have been tested about 6 months longer than it was. Would have eliminated a lot of the problems people encountered with it.

It appears, OS designers assume that most people do nothing but look at pictures and retarded videos all day.

So YOU'RE the one that Vista works for.   I'd figured there was someONE it worked for out there somewhere.  [actually I have it on a VM...seems OK ... so I'll leave it right there....working OK in a VM within......Windows 7....

I'm pretty sure you'll be pretty alone in a select club of people who find/found Vista to be better AND "less bloated" than 7, particularly when 7 has a smaller resource 'footprint'.

The groundswell of public opinion will be agin' yer, Snow....

If 80% of the pics on the net are of naked women then yes, that's exactly what they do....

If?

on Jun 07, 2011

If? Didn't you get the memo? There's a newbie out now. Its the Beta of SmutNet. All you wanted to see and puke at.

on Jun 07, 2011

I guess a lot more will be known once the closed beta hits more people.  I look forward to it!

Now that I know it's probably customizable, I am too.

Ahhh, we are talking about Windows 8 and not the naked women, right?
