Ramblings of an old Doc

Steven J. Vaughan-Nichols over at ZDNet summed it up pretty neatly for me and revealed problems and vulnerabilities which I didn’t know about.

Quoting just the highlights (see the review for details):

Operating system incompatibilities: XP is ignored. Whether it’s a dinosaur or not, it’s one of MS’s OS’s and this, to me at least, just isn’t playing fair.

Performance: FF4 betas and Chrome outperform it on the majority of benchmarks. Heck, Opera 11 seems faster to me, also.

The 64-bit version of IE 9 is second-rate. It’s slower that the 32 bit version. What does MS say? “The majority uses x32.” Well, x64 folks matter less? Good to know.

Lack of Security: While more secure than ie8, it’s far from secure. See the review for details. Basically? The Tracking thing is spotty, and the way it handles plug-ins (the fave attack point of hackers) does not warn the way it should when using an outdated plug-in. That’s a major vulnerability.

Lack of Compatibility: So you use “Compatibility”. So, you’re using a prior form of rendering. So much for the hype.

That’s why I’m pretty disappointed. Also? It doesn’t look all that good, at least to me. So I’m sticking with Chrome and FF and Opera.

Quoting DrJBHL, reply 69What browser were you using, soulspark?

I'd imagine it had more to do with the OEM software than the site/browser. ASUS software is better than some, but I still got rid of it.

I was wondering if he was using a browser which 'told' the site he didn't have live messenger?

Even if he didn't have Messenger installed I would think they'd still ask if he wanted to do that. Seems a bit intrusive to just go ahead and install it without asking.

And I'm curious here. What is it that compels people to install multiple browsers rather than just sticking with one that works? As I said before I've used Firefox ever since I had my pc. I've never had any problems with it and it's always loaded and played whatever I wanted it to. The browser itself loads fast except on a few certain sites...but I don't think it has anything to do with the browser. So what am I missing here?

Because NONE, repeat... NONE work as well as people would like....and "the grass is greener...."

Users of multiple browsers simply enjoy multiple disappointment, that's all...

So what am I missing here?

Yesterday I tried posting a vid. ie9 showed it as posted. No other browser did, however. Then, I found the vid on youtube and posted it using 'old code' and Opera.

What Jafo said is true... as no browser is 'perfect', multiple disappointment is the menu fare.

I kind of figured that...but I just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing something.

I'm using IE8 on an ASUS laptop that's less than a year old. Asus.msn.com was the default homepage when I bought it and I never changed it.  I know the situation I described seems to be very unlikely, but I ask you to believe me, because it did happen.

I use chrome and have IE8 installed as well but is almost never used.

Funny thing is Chrome is really bad with fast connection speeds (might be router but router was designed ...). I had 50 MB connection actual 45 MB connected speed and problem with chrome was that it kept giving me page is offline or something similar message so I had to reload often to load page. Once I came down to 30 MB problems disappeared.

I find IE9 'good enough' that I won't want to kill myself when I need to use other people's PCs, but it's still years behind Chrome in terms of features. I'm also still finding critical bugs in the engine which cause some of my sites to not work at all. It's definitely not my code.

Several reasons.  As Jafo noted, some work better at one thing than another.  Also you can browse the same site with different personnas (like the news sites).  Or have multiple emails accounts open at the same time (2 for Yahoo or gmail) and they do not stomp on each other.
