Ramblings of an old Doc

Facebook most blacklisted site on the net.

I just read this article on TheWindowsClub.com informing on the latest Facebook fiasco and that while supposedly increasing their security measures.

Emsisoft has reported a massive outbreak of new Facebook Malware. One variant even hijacks the user’s Facebook account. Interestingly, it’s passed by using their instant messenger.

Hardly surprising at the site where it’s founder, Mark Zuckerberg’s account was hacked.

Emsisoft discovered the activities of the Facebook threat Trojan-Downloader.Win32.FraudLoad.

Now there is a new version, taking over ones complete Facebook account!

Users of Emsisoft Anti-Malware are already protected from the new variant detected as Worm.Win32.Yimfoca!A2 or Trojan.Win32.Scar!IK.

From The Window’s Club: “This Malware uses the Facebook chat system to spread through users. It sends messages to the friends of an infected user, and a link. This link leads to a fake Facebook page stating  “Photo has been Moved.” Everyone clicking “View Photo” obtains the Malware file without even knowing it.”

They go on to explain that “as soon as the file is executed, another browser window is opened,  and either a harmless Myspace or Google page will be opened. The Malware, however remains active invisibly in the background. As soon as the user opens his Facebook account, the malware becomes active again and sends out new photo messages to all friends of the victim. During the next login at Facebook, the login page will be blocked and the malware shows a “Scam Survey” message together with the link “Win an Apple product”. If followed, the user will end up a web page with advertisements or affiliate links.”

“A second variant of this Trojan-Virus shows the message “Today is our 6th Birthday!”, as soon as the Facebook account is opened. If the user changes back to his login page, he sees “Your account has been suspended! The suspend will be released after 80 minutes. The suspend will be disabled only if you fill out one survey!”. The account is not suspended. It’s just a false message from the malware, says Emsisoft. Again the link does not lead to a survey, but to the advertisement page.”

All I know is I have not had any problems and a lot of that has to do with how I handle facebook. I would not go as far as saying people are stupid and that is why they are being attacked. That is a little rude. But I do think most of it can be contributed to what you do with facebook. I would venture to say that no one will have any problems by opening the site and reading their messages. What cause the problems is when you click on things you assume are safe. I do not click on any external links period even if they are sent by friends. I watch no video links and I use none of the apps. I am not against being cautious but I think sometimes people take it a little to far instead of educating themselves with ways of avoiding potential problems. I am not about to walk down the middle of the street in my city because I will get run over by a truck. Walking down the sidewalk is no guarantee I won't get hit but I do it to reduce the chances. I am not about to live in fear of all the what ifs and stay off the sidewalk too.

Me? Rude? Perish the thought! I'm such a bastard!

...honestly though, I have friends who are too stupid to own a computer. The types who continually need people to fix their machines, keep their software up to date, etc. Hopeless.

I still love em but you can only sigh after you hear about it the fifteenth time.

The same could be said of people and cars - BUT - they do own them and - as you say - we love em, and have to keep bailing them out.

Not owning a computer makes you stupid? I don't think so. I would debate that owning a computer makes you stupid. People do not know how to think for themselves in today's world. For many solving simple things cannot be accomplished unless they have a machine that does it for them. Even schools allow students to bring calculators to class. We then wonder why the cashier cannot give us the correct change when we buy our coffee. Heck some kids cannot even tell time properly unless the clock is digital.

No! technology has not made people more intelligent. If I am not mistaken there are even scientific studies that backup what I am saying. Do you think things like the Pyramids could be built today without machinery? Maybe but I doubt it. If they were built today without machinery I bet the construction would take twice as long as when the Egyptians built them. There was a time when there were no computers or calculators and people actually had to use their brain. The more you increase brain activity by exercising it the smarter you become. Many no longer do that though and are content with becoming couch potato zombies. I will even go as far as predicting there is coming a day when book stores and libraries will be a thing of the past. People will have no need for them because if they want to know something or even read a book they will do it on their pad.

That is my 2 cents worth.

Well, the only people who are "smart" these days are the people who MAKE the machines, creates materials for the machines, and writes programs the machines. Heck, even I don't know hardly anything about programming.  It's the consumers who buy these things who are "stupid".  When I was young, I always thought that people in the 21st Century would be much smarter, but that theory backfired tremendously.

You know what I would love to see?  Seeing the Entire Internet shut off for an ENTIRE WEEK! (As a social/societal experiment)  That means for Computers, Phones, and every other Internet Connected Device.  I want to see our patheitc society break down and riot, just because people can't log on to FaceBook or use their Smartphones for anything useful.  *uses sarcastic tone* "I can't log in to FaceBook!  It's the End of the World!"  Most people in 3rd World countries could care less.  I could care less. (about FaceBook)

People need to learn to enjoy the simple pleasures in life, like going outside for walks, assembling puzzles, or reading a paper book (not e-readers).

There was a time when there were no computers or calculators and people actually had to use their brain.

And back when I was in Grade School, calculators were not permitted. (this was in the mid-nineties even) We had to "show our work" on every math problem.  I didn't even buy my first computer until 2005.  And I rarely used the internet before then.  (Except for homework, not for personal pleasure.)

This is happening now.  I wouldn't be suprised if Barnes & Noble goes the way of Blockbuster, because of "obsolescance".  RedBox & NetFlix have taken over Blockbuster, and now Amazon & the Online portion of B & N is taking over the Brick n' Mortar stores as well as Borders (another bookseller).

*sigh* I miss the 90's.

I thought the massive malware outbreak happened when Facebook launched.

I enjoy simple pleasures in life, like posting junk on forums, thinking nature is prettier when it's on fire, and reading stuff on the web.

If I lost access to the internet I'm sure life would go on. I'd probably sleep a lot.
