Mr. Jobs is credited with turning around the fortunes of the company

Apple boss Steve Jobs has announced that he is to take "medical leave" from the company.

In an e-mail to employees he said he was taking the break to focus on his health.

He said he would continue as chief executive of Apple and be involved in any major decisions. Day-to-day running of the company will pass to Tim Cook.

In late 2008 to mid-2009 Mr Jobs was absent from Apple for six months to have a liver transplant.

It was part of the series of treatments he has undergone for pancreatic cancer. He was first diagnosed as suffering from the cancer in 2004 and underwent surgery later that year to remove a tumor from his pancreas.

In his e-mail Mr. Jobs said he would be back at work as soon as he can.

"At my request, the board of directors has granted me a medical leave of absence so I can focus on my health. I will continue as CEO and be involved in major strategic decisions for the company," he said in an e-mail.

"I have asked Tim Cook to be responsible for all of Apple's day to day operations."

Mr. Cook is currently the firm's chief operating officer. He has run the company day-to-day before now during previous times when Mr. Jobs has been dealing with his health problems.

The announcement was made on a public holiday in the US when there is no trading in company stocks and shares. However, Apple shares traded in Frankfurt are down 7% on the news.

It comes ahead of Apple's first quarter results, due on 18 January.

Mr Jobs is an iconic presence at Apple and is widely credited as the architect of its current run of success based around products such as the iPad and iPhone.

The absence comes as Apple is rumored to be preparing to launch the second version of its iPad - the successor to the tablet computer it launched in 2010.

I certainly wish him well through this ordeal. This kind of thing goes way beyond Windows/Apple preferences. His life could be in jeopardy, and that human vulnerability unites all.

"Get well soon, Mr. Jobs."

I just read this on Yahoo 7.  According to the story Steve Jobs has but weeks to live, and looking at the photo he doesn't look at all well.

If true, let's hope it's as painless as it possibly could be and he suffers little.

Amen.  The world will lose a great visionary when Jobs does leave us.

Absolutely, Dave and Dr Guy. Appreciate the support.

Not sure how much to believe in the story since it's from the Enquirer. Looking at the second photo, I'm not sure if it's him or if the hand is real or PhotoShop.

Doc, you should be a better judge of this than I, are there Doctors that are good enough to judge how long a person has to live from a photo like this?

If it's true, I feel for him and his family, no one should have to endure the pain he must be going through.

on Feb 17, 2011

No, CG1. No one knows from looking how long another has. Besides, a photo can be (forgive the pun) doctored... you and I do it all the time with Ps.

I can say "It looks terminal" (to myself) but I wouldn't put it that way to others... not without knowledge of the problem and labs, etc. but then it wouldn't be "from just looking". Occasionally I've hit it on the nose. Other times, close. But never vocalized.

With all due respect, the story Yahoo 7 printed was quoted from a tabloid -- The National Enquirer -- the same rag that gave us Bat Boy and sitings of the chupacabra.

This is what PC Magazine had to say about that: http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2380530,00.asp

"Combine the news of the alleged sighting at the clinic with the news that President Obama is meeting with Jobs today in San Francisco: Is it possible that Jobs could be sick and meeting with the president? Sure. But with just weeks to live? It's looking less likely."

I personally don't care for Apple products and don't subscribe to the cult of Jobs.

But what I find really disturbing is this stalkerish obsession with him.  He's having health issues.  Why can't everyone just leave him alone?  Why are people trying to make his condition news?  I saw an article about some newsidiots who photographed him leaving the hospital...

JUST LEAVE THE MAN ALONE!

Sheesh.

To anyone wishing to make a philosophical discussion/debate out of this news, this is not the place. I posted the link to the news of Steve Jobs' situation as a courtesy to DrJBHL and those interested in Steve Jobs' condition/career/life, etc, so please go elsewhere if you cannot contain your philosophical/debating urges.

As for the accuracy/veracity of the report, I would hate to hazard a guess, but I do know that pancreatic cancer is unrelenting and merciless, and what we should be doing here is wishing Steve Jobs all the best in what must surely be the most difficult time.

The guy has cancer, can you all shut the fuck up and grow up please.  I like making dickish comments more than anyone, but show some humanity please.

"When I was a child, I spoke as a child, thought as a child, understood as a child, but when I became a man, I put away childish things."  that the bible for grow the fuck up.

And I thank starkers for doing it.

To those who are new here, the Cap'n and I have been mates on "The Twisted Sister" since days of yore, with Shaunna, Karen, Storm and the goodly Angus1949 lost after a gallant battle with cancer.

I've dealt with suffering and death for more than 30 years. Everyone's turn comes sooner or later and for some, more often. It behooves us all to be gentle and kind with all we meet for we are all made of the same cloth....

Strangely, Lord Xia got it right.

Could have been worded a little more 'PC', but right all the same.

Brillig, it's the nature of the beast that anything that befalls a person of prominence will be 'news'.

Actually, Jafo was referring to this:

Actually, it's the nature of the beast that anything that people will watch/read/click on will be 'news'.

It wouldn't be 'news' if people excercised a little restraint.

You must be the change you want to see in the world.

You must be the change you want to see in the world.

You must also use quotation marks:

"Become the change you most wish to see in the world." - Mohandas K. Ghandi

on Feb 17, 2011

And I thank starkers for doing it.

My pleasure, matey.

"Become the change you most wish to see in the world."

"The change I most like to see in the world is the cash I get back after making a purchase" - starkers
